Our story began twelve years ago, when we gained a dedicated following selling tarts and croissants at the Pakatakan Farmers Market. In July 2012 we opened our store in a beautiful historic building in the tranquil hamlet of Bovina, New York.
We offer a variety of fresh baked tarts and cakes, muffins, and deliciously addictive almond croissants, along with a daily assortment of breakfast and lunch specials made from fresh local ingredients. We also carry an array of fair trade coffees and teas blends, served hot or iced.
Making people feel comfortable is the most important part of our business. We strive to create a space where people gather to relax and hang out. Come in and enjoy a leisurely meal in our light, airy main room, or make yourself at home with your laptop in our leather and shag-carpet decorated "living room". In the mood for some music? Just choose a record from our extensive vinyl collection to play on the turntable. Alone, or in with a group of friends, Two Old Tarts is a place to kick back, unwind and enjoy the atmosphere.
The Two Old Tarts are comprised of two creative entrepreneurs who met in 2001 with a common vision to create a baked goods company that offered fresh, inventive, and irresistible line of old world bakery quality delights with a unique twist.
The Tarts began their meteoric rise to fame as the "bakers to the (Catskill) stars" at the Pepacton Farmers Market and 12 short years later opened their flagship store in the thriving metropolis of Bovina (bo-vi-na) New York garnering accolades from the New York Times and other esteemed publications.
In addition to their extraordinary baked goods, they've also created both a line of apparel (Tee shirts), and the soon to be famous Catskill Blend of whole bean coffee to further entice and thrill their clamoring mob of admirers. An appearance on NBC's Today show is expected soon, though no one from NBC has yet actually called. Check back often for further details and product offerings.
The early years: John was born in Chicago, Illinois in December of 1959. In 1972 his family relocated to Palo Alto California. He graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1978. After nearly graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle, John returned to the Bay Area to begin what would become a decade's long career in Fashion retailing. He began his career as a buyer trainee at Macy's in 1982. His other career "highlights" included stints at Liberty House Hawaii, Contempo Casuals, Judy's, Giorgio Beverly Hills, and ultimately Chief Merchandising Officer of Fredericks of Hollywood. Hence the decision to move East!
Scott was born in New York City in December of 1959, and raised in Red Bank New Jersey where he graduated from Red Bank Catholic. After much deliberation, Scott chose to attend the prestigious University of the Virgin Islands. Needless to say, he returned to New York City within two years. He spent nearly two decades working at both Maxwell's Plum and Café de Artiste as both a waiter and concierge. Hence, the decision to move upstate.
In 2001, John was invited to a lunch by his neighbor Diane. Upon arriving at the café and greeted by Scott, the two shared that "you know that I know that you know" look. After three further solo trips to the café, Scott wrote on the check "would you like to have dinner". Thus began the real story of the Two Old Tarts.
John had recently moved to Andes, New York in search of a simpler, rural life than the one he left behind in Los Angeles. He'd spent close to thirty years in the fashion retail business and was... well, let's say exhausted and ready for some new digs.
Scott discovered the Catskills in 1984, after his brother David purchased a weekend home in Denver, New York. Scott and his (then) partner decided to purchase a weekend home up the street. It only took a few years for Scott to permanently move upstate, and begin his journey to baking with an intensive course study at the Culinary Institute of America. 17 years and two partners later, Scott and John met and fell in love in 2001.
After "retiring" from the fashion biz, John and Scott needed to decide what to do, and how to do that which would allow them to make the Catskills their permanent full time home. With Scott's baking expertise, and John's marketing and retail expertise, the answer was simple. Take Two Old Tarts from the farmers market to the beautiful historic building in Bovina (bo-vi-na) New York. The shop opened on July 21st, 2012. They are thrilled with the reception of the community and those surrounding, and look forward to a happy and rewarding career as proprietors of the Two Old Tarts.
Oh, the earlier stuff about the Tee shirts and coffee are true. We are thrilled to ship anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. Hope to see you in the shop soon!
